Illuminating trends for 2018

Over a month into 2018 already - I can't believe it! What isn't surprising, however, is what we're seeing in lighting trend predictions for the year.

The Milan Furniture Fair last year revealed some predictions for 2018 that are proving fairly accurate. Marble continues to be the preferred material for kitchens and has transitioned to light fittings. The natural stone paired with metallics is popular, however the shiny coppers and rose golds are being replaced by duller metals such as dark brass, bronze and steel as well as matte black paint.

Warm colours, powdery pinks and 'jewel' tones dominated the furniture and soft furnishings at the fair in striking contrast to the minimalist greys and earthy tones seen in past years. This doesn't seem to have translated over to light fittings at this stage, nor do I think it will to any great extent.

Wicker seems to be making a comeback in furniture. Wicker integrates well with lighting and creates interesting shadows and patterns. It's easy to see how this natural material can work well with current lighting trends and styles. Keep an eye out for this one - I think its popularity will grow in coming years.

As always your choices should reflect your personality and taste. I personally don't like the 'jewel' colour tones that were so dominant at the fair, but I love the new dark metallics coming in. Whatever your taste, I hope your choices create a space you love being in.
